What a Personal Licence Allows

A Personal Licence authorises an individual to:

  • Supervise or authorise the sale of alcohol at licensed premises

  • Act as the Designated Premises Supervisor (DPS) on a Premises Licence

  • Work in any location across England and Wales without needing to reapply to each local authority

The Personal Licence Application Process

  1. Accredited Qualification
Applicants must first obtain an accredited licensing qualification such as the Level 2 Award for Personal Licence Holders (APLH).

  2. Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check
A Basic DBS certificate, issued within the last 30 days, must be submitted with the application to demonstrate suitability.

  3. Preparation of Documentation
Licensing professionals assist in preparing the full application pack, including identification, qualification certificates, photographs, and declarations.

  4. Submission to the Licensing Authority
The completed Personal Licence application is lodged with the local Licensing Authority for review and approval.

Once granted, a Personal Licence remains valid indefinitely, subject to revocation or surrender, and enables the holder to act as a responsible person in the authorisation of alcohol sales.
