In 2024, the number of licensed premises in England and Wales saw significant closures due to economic pressures, including rising energy costs and business rates. Approximately 750 pubs were projected to close in the first half of the year. In late 2023, 800 licensed premises closed in just the final quarter, continuing the trend of closures from previous years. Overall, the licensed premises sector in England and Wales has been shrinking consistently, with nearly 3,000 closures in the 12 months leading up to December 2023, reflecting a difficult climate for the hospitality industry
